You’ll need four pieces of 4 x 4 x 35 wood to make up the legs, another four pieces 2 x 4 x 80-1/2 that will be used for the lower and upper long rails, four short rails that are sized 2 x 4 x 32 1/2, two middle stretcher that are 2 x 4 x 34 1/2, three sheets of ¾ plywood for the lower shelf and work surface, a sheet of ¼ MDF for a replaceable work surface, and lastly, 23 pieces lag screws that are ¼ x 2 ½. In case you’re wondering, we’re talking inches.

 

How to Build a Workbench Steps

You have to cut the pieces of wood according to their respective sizes. You have to drill holes that will be used for lag screws. Drill a ¼ hole though a 1 ¾ countersink.  The rails on top are centered on the wooden legs. Likewise, the lower rails are also centered on the legs but on the bottom edge.

Assembling is the main event in every method of how to build a workbench. You can start with the posts and the long rails by gluing the lag screws with wood glue. Set aside the posts and rails until the glue is all dried up.

You can continue by merging the two sides together by using the shorter rails. Glue both the lower and the upper middle stretchers together with your deck screws. This will provide more support. The sheets of plywood will act as the surface of the workbench. Glue these with wood glue and screw with 1 ¼ screws.

The MDF will be used for the brunt of the workbench. You will have to use deck screws to secure it. You can easily replace it once it gets damaged. Creating a lower shelf is also ideal for storage purposes. You can use a ¾ sheet of plywood. Screw the plywood by using deck screws.
